Session Splitting

Rules that end a session early even without inactivity, such as a campaign change or a different user ID.

All glossary terms

Session splitting rules end a session early even when the visitor stays active. Common rules split on a campaign change, a change of logged-in user, or an unrealistically long session.

Why It Matters

Different tools use different rules. Universal Analytics split sessions at midnight and on campaign changes; GA4 doesn’t. Comparing session counts across tools without knowing the rules leads to wrong conclusions.

In d8a.tech

By default, a session is split when the UTM campaign changes, when the user ID changes, after 12 hours, or after 1,000 events. All of these are configurable.
